Although billed as a “one-woman” event, The Rosa Lee Show actually requires two people for a performance: Rosa Lee, the performer, and Damon Timm, the technical director. The show cannot performed without both of these people and all of the technical requirements being met.

Here is a list of the basic requirements for a performance venue. The host is responsible for making sure all of these requirements are met for a show:

  1. Stage -or- Performance Space
  2. Lighting -and- Lighting Controls
  3. LCD Projector -and- Projection Screen
  4. Sound System

While these are the basic requirements for The Rosa Lee Show each performance venue is different and each requires unique accommodations and preparation to ensure everything goes off smoothly. Below is a more detailed explanation of what is needed and why.

And of course: we are happy to answer any questions you may have as well as speak directly with the technical people at your venue.

Detailed Technical Requirements

Control Booth -or- Lighting Booth

The show requires a control booth (or a control “table” if the performance venue does not have its own designated lighting booth) that has a clear line of sight to the stage.

This is the area that all of the connections for sound, LCD projection, and lights need to terminate in order for the show to function. The technical manager will remain in this area during the show, operating the lighting, laptop, and sound (and also providing voice interpretation from this area if necessary).

It is critical to ensure that, in addition to the lighting controls, all the cables for sound (XLR or RCA) and LCD projection (VGA) terminate in this location.

The Stage

The stage needs to be easily viewed by all members of the audience. Rosa Lee typically performs from a single location either: [1] stage left, with the projection screen located either center stage or stage right, or [2] center stage, with the projection screen located directly above her.

There should be a clean or solid background or backdrop so there are no visual distractions to audience members.

Lighting & Lighting Controls

A lighting board (or other lighting controls) are required. Prior to the show we will need to be able to adjust and set the lights for the performance.

There are typically three different settings we require: [1] focused spot (two to four balanced lights) on stage left, where Rosa Lee performs most of the show; [2] a basic stage wash, for when we bring audience members onto the stage; [3] house light controls, to dim and brighten the house lights during the show.

LCD Projector & Projection Screen

A LCD projector and screen capable of displaying an image of a size and quality that can be viewed by the entire audience clearly. The show utilizes video throughout the entire performance and it’s important to have a projector powerful enough, and a screen big enough, that everyone can enjoy the show.

Typically, built in “drop-down” screens with overhead hung projectors are perfectly suited for this; however, if you will be bringing in a portable projector with a screen on a stand, we’ll need to make sure it is big enough (and powerful enough) to handle the video.

The LCD connection (VGA) needs to terminate in the Control Booth to it can be connected to the laptop. We have a 100 foot VGA cable available to bring with us (if necessary).

Sound System

In addition to video, the show utilizes music and other audio effects; a capable sound system is needed, one that delivers enough amplification to make the performance enjoyable for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing members of the audience.

Specific wattage/power for this sound system will vary depending on the size of the performance venue. It should be noted, however, that typical “public address” (PA) sounds system (often found in hotel conference halls, or built-in ceiling speakers) are not usually suitable for this type of performance (as they are designed for microphones and “spoken word” use, not for music).

Speakers and amplification specifically designed to handle music and a full dynamic range will make the show enjoyable for all members of the audience.

We bring our own laptop with all the show material on-board, and provide 100′ connections for VGA video output and XLR sound (if necessary). You will need to supply power, lighting board/equipment, amplifier and speakers (sound system). We prefer to visit the venue in the morning before the show so all technical aspects of the show need to be in place at this time so we can test audio, lighting, and video on the stage.
